Speaking American English
Pronunciation/Accent Modification
The ability of a speaker to be better understood by others is the focus of this program. The program utilizes activities to build the participant's ability to discriminate American English speech sounds, improve pronunciation of American English speech sounds, address tone and volume of voice control to convey meaning and build acceptable English intonation patterns for conversation. The program meets weekly for a total of 24 hours.
Program Description
- The individual's communication skills are assessed during an interview with the individual to determine his or her communication needs.
- The training activities focus on the speech skills that the individual needs to improve to address personal and social communication skills.
- Audio feedback is used during meetings to improve the individual's ability to analyze his or her speech.
- Training activities are changed as the individual's communications skills improve or new needs are identified.

- Learn the general rules for English intonation and how to pronounce English sounds that are difficult for the individual to say.
- Learn grammar rules for the structures the individual has difficulty using.
